I need clarification on a part of the book Tempted from the House of Night series.?

I recently finished reading the book Tempted from the House of Night series. At the end of the book, Zoey's soul is shattered and her body is left while she enters the Otherworld. When Darius and Aphrodite see Zoey's body, they mention something about her tattoos. What happened to her tattoos? Did they expand? Or did they disappear? Or what?
